Big Pharma, Health and Biotech Spent Record Amount this Campaign

Big Pharma, and the rest of the health sector spent more money than ever before this election cycle to support candidates that support their interests and push to protect their agenda. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan organization that analyzes campaign spending, these companies have spent almost $200 million—topping their previous record, set during the 2008 election, by 9 percent.

The record-breaking donations were made possible by the 2010 Supreme Court ruling that eased restrictions on political contributions by businesses. As a result, corporations and large companies were able to spend more freely during the current political campaigns.

This year, as in 2008, the health sector contributed more money to Obama, who heads the Democratic ticket, than to his Republican rival, Mitt Romney. But when spending on congressional races is also considered, Republicans have received about 56% of all health sector contributions for this election cycle, in keeping with long-term trends.

Your vote and voice is important because you can let your elected officials know that you want support for lower drug prices, and the ability to look for lower cost options from safe companies like Big Pharma and other health groups spend to keep their influence strong amongst lawmakers, but your voice is just as important.  Vote today and whoever gets elected, let them know that drug prices and support for prescription drug reimportation is an important issue to you and your family.
